"That's The Way You've Got To Be", the new single from Bleu Collar Pirates, is another slice of lushly melancholic Americana from the crew that brought you last summer's epic "Snake Handlers and Gypsies". Justus Conant's latest narrative from the dark side of the street, where the shades close furtively as evening falls, reduces all the finer instincts of love to money in the judge's pocket. Equal parts vintage R&B, gutbucket Rolling Stones and Zeppelin at their most lyrical, "That's The Way You've Got To Be" rocks an abundance of blues harp, stinging Telecaster chords and weeping rhythm and blues piano over a lazy, swinging rhythm section that lands hard somewhere between Charlie Watts and, well, Watts. A perfect autumn drop, falling like leaves onto the unkempt lawns of some grey suburb, a good ache, a fine hurt, a sweet cut that bleeds the blues.
